Playing Borat can be a dangerous business.

During an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show on Monday, Sacha Baron Cohen relived the moment when he was recognised in a costume within a costume during a gun rally in Washington state — and had to make a hasty getaway as the crowd stormed the stage.

Baron Cohen was playing Borat in disguise as a country singer, Country Steve, at the event, which was shot back in June as part of his recently released sequel Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.

"Word got out that it was me, and then the organizers and a lot of people in the crowd got very angry, they tried to storm the stage — luckily for me, I had hired the security," Baron Cohen tells Colbert in the video above.

The footage shows Baron Cohen running back to his trailer and holding the door shut, as angry people outside attempt to force their way in. He later tells Colbert that it was the first movie for which he had to wear a bullet-proof vest while filming — and watching the footage, you can see why.
