We're in the home stretch of the movie awards race now, with the Indie Spirits and the Oscars coming this weekend to close out the season for another year.

Which means now's as good a time as any to stop and consider: Where do these awards actually come from?

We're not talking about the organizations that put on these shows, or the voting process that selects the nominees. We mean the statuettes themselves, the trophies that winners get to take home, put on their mantels, and treasure forever.

Turns out it's quite a process – one as precisely planned and carefully executed as any awards campaign. Only, you know, totally different.

Watch the exclusive featurette above for a peek inside the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, and find out exactly how a Spirit Award comes into being.

You might not know how to win one, but at least you'll get to know how to make one.
