It's been nearly a decade since Heath Ledger died – nine years, three months, and 11 days, to be more precise – and his absence is still deeply felt. Now a new documentary promises to show fans a side of the late actor that they've probably never seen before.

I Am Heath Ledger combines the usual movie clips and talking head interviews with home movies, many of which Ledger filmed himself.

In the scene above, Ledger and his friends goof around with a camcorder on their way to Burning Man – which one of Ledger's pals describe in the movie as "Heath's favorite place on Earth."

Mashable caught I Am Heath Ledger at the Tribeca Film Festival, and while it won't offer much for gossip hounds or students of Hollywood history, it does serve up catharsis for those who still miss Ledger.

I Am Heath Ledger will get a one-night-only showing in 300 theaters across the country on Wednesday, May 3 at 7:30 PM local time; check the Fathom Events website for more details. The theatrical presentation will include exclusive bonus content.

After that, the documentary will premiere on Spike TV on Wednesday, May 17 at 10 PM.
