Documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux is well-known for confronting the weird, the wacky and the controversial in his work, but in his first feature-length doc he takes on possibly his most ambitious topic yet: the elusive Church of Scientology.
Made in collaboration with director John Dower and producer Simon Chinn, the film features several re-created scenes based on the accounts of former members, including former senior church official Mark Rathbun -- a.k.a. the "baddest ass dude in Scientology."
Theroux failed to make contact with current head of the church, David Miscavige, and the trailer gives a sneak peek into some of the less-than-friendly encounters between the filmmakers and church members.
Although the film premiered at the 2015 London Film Festival, it is expected to hit screens in the UK on Oct. 7, 2016, and will be available in Australian theaters for limited time beginning Sept. 8.
