An Indian man who didn't know how to swim came up with an ingenious strategy to rescue a drowning dog. He used his turban, an important symbol of the Sikh religion, to haul the canine to safety.

Sarwan Singh saw the dog struggling to stay afloat in an irrigation canal, while driving his car in the state of Punjab. Though there were people standing around, no one was helping the dog. Since the 28-year-old did not know how to swim himself, he took off his turban and used it to support himself while he lowered himself near the water. He then used another piece of cloth to get a grip on the dog and pull him to safety.

"The moment I started taking off my turban, people watching around were shocked," Singh said. "They thought I was disrespecting my faith. 'But what was important at that point was to save the animal's life."
