So the Democratic National Convention is now underway, and Stephen Colbert is feeling optimistic.

"This feels like the real beginning of the election — a chance for the American people to do the work that our elected officials failed to do for the past four years, and that's hold Donald Trump accountable," says Colbert in the clip above, which was broadcast live Monday night.

"It's a little bit like we're in the middle of a road trip, and we've finally realised dad's lost and we have to take the wheel, and also send dad to jail for stealing the car."

The Late Show host spends the next 13 minutes working through the highlights of the convention's first day, including several awkward moments that occurred during the event, from Congressman Jim Clyburn addressing the wrong camera to two entertainingly cringey audience reaction shots (in one the family pictured look incredibly bored, and in the other the camera stays on two women clapping for what Colbert says feels like "about a hundred years.")

Ultimately, though, he couldn't find any quips to make about the speech made by former First Lady Michelle Obama.

"I'll be honest with you," Colbert says. "My job is to have a joke for every time somebody says anything in public. And after watching Michelle Obama's speech, I have never been more happy to fail at my job."
