As protests against police brutality continue to rage in all 50 states, Stephen Colbert began his Wednesday night opening monologue by noting that the Minneapolis police officers involved in the death of George Floyd have now all been charged — Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes until he died, had his third-degree murder charge escalated to second, and the other three officers present were charged with aiding and abetting.
"Activism works. Justice is possible," said Colbert. "Easy, peasy, hold protests for nine days straight in 380 American cities... squeezy."
Colbert mocked President Trump for, among many other things, an interview on Fox News radio where he claimed to "doing very well with African-Americans, and with the vote, in polls and everything." Yes, that President Trump. Yes, this week.
"That's why they're in the streets: they're celebrating how much they love me," drawled Colbert, in his vocal cord-shredding Trump voice. "And I'm joining the party by tossing 'em a six-pack of love gas. Those are tears of joy."
Colbert also took aim at the decision to send in Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and ICE agents for reinforcements.
"Oh good! Let's cool things down with some famously reasonable and laid-back ICE agents," he said, with a stunningly restrained level of sarcasm. "If that doesn't work, they can de-escalate by sending in some rabid badgers strapped with running chainsaws."
