"Here we go again, again," Late Show host Stephen Colbert quipped. "I've got that real feeling of déjà coup."

Former president Donald Trump's second impeachment trial finally got underway on Monday, almost a year after his first impeachment, and Republicans are again trying to shield their darling baby boy from a consequence. While the prosecution presented a video demonstrating that the Jan. 6 insurrection and Trump's rally were one and the same, numerous Republicans determinedly averted their gaze as though not looking at it meant it didn't exist.

"You know that they say, gentlemen," said Colbert. "See no evil, hear no evil, makes you seem really evil."

Colbert noted that, unlike most sequels, Impeachment 2: Electric Boogaloo is shaping up to be "far less boring than we thought" — though the matter wasn't helped by Trump's defense lawyer Bruce Castor.

"Castor was so rambling there were times it seemed like his plan was to put everybody to sleep, then grab the articles of impeachment and just tiptoe out," said Colbert.

To Castor's credit, he did eventually find a point — that impeachment is meant to be rare. But to Castor's detriment, Colbert was able to easily point out why that defense isn't a defense at all.

"It's not a requirement for them to be rare," said Colbert. "That's like the police going, 'Well, prosecuting triple homicide's supposed to be a rare occurrence — we had one last week — so let's call call these three headless bodies an oopsie daisy.'"
