'He wants you to ignore reality': Stephen Colbert savages Trump's unhinged town hall performance

With fewer than 50 days remaining until the presidential election, things are getting down to the wire. So much so that not only did Donald Trump actually put himself in a room with non-rusted-on, actually-somehow-still-undecided voters at a televised town hall this week for some reason, but Scientific American magazine also endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time in its 175-year history. (Hint: It wasn't Trump.)

"At the heart of Scientific American's critique is Trump's abysmal response to COVID-19," Stephen Colbert noted on Wednesday night. "He's denied the science. He's lied about the science. He's mocked to the science. Come November 3, he's desperate that you'll forget why you're standing six feet apart and why you're swaddled like the guys who came to take away E.T."

Colbert ran through some of the blatant lies and bizarre statements Trump made during the ABC town hall, including talking over questioners, looking sulky or confused at simple questions about healthcare and systemic racism, and even blaming Joe Biden — who is *checks notes* not currently the president — for not issuing a federal mask mandate.

"Oh, that is a brutal takedown of President Biden," nodded Colbert. "You know what, now that I think about it, perhaps Joe Biden doesn't deserve another four years. Perhaps we should give this blond-headed newcomer a chance."

Trump also, again, brazenly denied that he deliberately chose to downplay the dangers of the pandemic back in March, despite a recording of him saying he did exactly that being absolutely everywhere this week.

"I don't know why Donald Trump thinks that all of this will work," Colbert said. "He wants you to ignore reality. And I guess he's making reality so bad, that becomes an appealing option."
