FX's Legion was our first small step towards introducing the X-Men franchise to primetime TV, but Fox's The Gifted wears its mutant stripes proudly -- the new series from showrunner Matt Nix follows a seemingly ordinary family whose lives are upended when the kids are revealed to possess mutant abilities.

Mashable has an exclusive look behind the scenes of the series, which is executive produced by the architects of the X-Men movies, Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.

We don't yet know how The Gifted slots into the continuity of the films, but it's clear that they're connected, as a character namedrops the heroic team in the video above: "We don't even know if the X-Men exist anymore, but we're getting picked off one by one. When do we fight?"

Judging by this action-packed sneak peek, the answer is October 2, when The Gifted premieres on Fox.
