Timor-Leste, a tiny nation in Southeast Asia, is facing a huge problem – 72% of its population does not have access to hand-washing facilities with soap and water. On top of that, there are 70 tonnes of plastic generated every day.

Now a Mercy Corps initiative has turned over 100,000 plastic water bottles into hand-washing stations for communities that are vulnerable to the spread of COVID-19.

The initiative was partly financed by the EU and its partners include Caltech Unipessoal, Ltd, Heineken Timor-Leste, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Mercy Corps and The United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
