Some people would rue being portrayed as the worst filmmaker of all time. Not Tommy Wiseau.
James and Dave Franco's new movie The Disaster Artist tells the story of the so-called worst movie ever made, The Room (2003). In it James Franco plays Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, directed and starred in the infamous original. Dave Franco, meanwhile, plays Greg Sestero, a close friend of Wiseau who also starred in the original movie.
You might think depicting these men as the minds behind the worst film of all time would make for an awkward chat (especially if James Franco had to mimic your accent to do so) but all four men—Tommy, Greg and their Franco counterparts—sat down in conversation with the LA Times to talk about The Disaster Artist.
Tommy and Greg seem pretty content with the Francos' portrayal of them and their cinema anti-masterpiece, and the actors share a little about how they tapped into these particular men's personalities for the film. James for example listened to tapes of Tommy talking on the drive into work, but didn't actually meet the man until they met on-set.
So, it turns out the way to get a film made about you is to make a terrible film. Meta-surreality has never been more entertaining.
