It's wild that Todd Haynes, the filmmaker behind Velvet Goldmine and I'm Not There, hasn't ever tackled a straightforward documentary until now, particularly about one of his apparent favorite subjects: music.

The Velvet Underground, Haynes' documentary that premiered at Cannes back in July, delves into the heavily textured art-rock of its eponymous rock & roll band. This jumping-off point for the careers of Lou Reed and John Cale was a particular favorite of pop artist Andy Warhol back in the '60s, and their seminal album Loaded remains an untouchable American music classic.

In this trailer, we get a brief taste of the personalities who lend their perspectives to The Velvet Underground, along with some of the formal elements — such as split screens and offset frames — that appear to lend the documentary a slightly disorienting vibe, much like the band itself.

The Velvet Underground comes to Apple TV+ on Oct. 15.
