Netflix released its trailer for Anna Kendrick's directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, on Tuesday, and it's harrowing.
The Pitch Perfect star's true crime adaptation is set in 1970s Los Angeles, when serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) appeared on ABC dating show The Dating Game, his abhorrent, very recent crimes unbeknownst to the producers, the audience, host Jim Lange (Tony Hale), and most especially to contestant Cheryl Bradshaw (Kendrick).
Woman of the Hour premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to mixed reviews. "The script by Ian MacAllister McDonald presents plenty of on-brand scenes for Kendrick," Mashable Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko wrote of the film. "But how does Kendrick's brand of humor connect with the grisly tale of the Dating Game Killer? It doesn't."
Woman of the Hour begins streaming on Netflix Oct. 18.
