Hiding in the high-concept, Glee-meets-Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premise of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist — a young woman climbing the ranks at a tech company suddenly starts hearing people's deepest feelings in the form of pop songs — is a surprisingly complex workplace and family dramedy with a killer cast.
One of the highlights is the weird and unexpectedly sweet friendship between engineering team leader Zoey (Jane Levy) and her high-powered, tech-veteran boss Joan (Lauren Graham). It's a refreshing, well-drawn pairing that's grown over the course of the show's first season from a prickly mentor-mentee vibe to one of mutual support, with the two bonding over shared experience as women in tech face as well as life problems bigger than brogrammer culture.
