LONDON --  When you're starting your day, a beer is probably the last thing you want. Unless, of course, you're trying the old 'hair of the dog' technique.

Well, one Scottish independent brewer is having none of that.

Innis & Gunn has combined its oak-aged India pale ale (IPA) with Dundee marmalade to create Marm & Ale, which they say is the world's first ever beer marmalade.

To make the 'spreadable beer', beer is added to the marmalade mixture during the boiling process to provide hoppy accents to the marmalade's typical orangey flavour.

Master brewers at Innis & Gunn have also created a marmalade IPA using a percolator, a piece of technology used to infuse beers with flavours by circulating ingredients through the beer during the brewing process.

Scotland has a long-standing relationship with marmalade, with Dundee believed to be the home of the first marmalade factory in the UK.

For now, the spreadable beer is available at The Beer Kitchen, Innis & Gunn's bar and restaurant in Dundee. However, if Marm & Ale proves to be a hit, they'll consider making it more widely available, a spokesperson told Mashable.
