Bernie Sanders was clearly not prepared for this.

The Vermont senator did not seem to expect to find himself beating Hillary Clinton in Michigan's Democratic primary on Tuesday night, nor did he expect to have to address the media about that.

That much was obvious from the last minute news conference Sanders held standing in front of what looked like some guy's shed.

"I want our viewers to know what we're looking at," said a clearly amused Anderson Cooper before Sanders appeared to speak at the microphone. "This is really the definition of a hastily called news conference — not a lot of signage, no supporters, no personal products."

He wasn't the only one entertained.

"I think we are in the midst of a very tight race," Sanders told reporters as he stood in front of the wood paneling and beneath four campaign signs hastily taped to the wall. "It is not clear yet who will win this election here in Michigan, but I just want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Michigan, who kind of repudiated the poles that had us 20, 25 points down two days ago and said that Bernie Sanders was not going anywhere."

He thanked the volunteers who went door-to-door and made calls in Michigan, assured supporters the win would help his campaign and Hillary Clinton's split the delegates and said, "what tonight means is the Bernie Sanders campaign, the people's revolution, the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the country and, frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen."

"We are very grateful for all of the support that we have gotten from this state and we look forward to going to Illinois, Ohio, Missouri and the other states that we will be competing in next week," Sanders said.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday night it wasn't yet clear if Sanders would hold off Clinton to take Michigan, but things were looking good.

With 81% reporting, Sanders maintained a three-point lead.
