Heartbroken crowd in Brussels gathers to sing John Lennon's 'Imagine'
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - MARCH 22: People gather at Place de la Bourse in support of the victims after the terrorist attacks on March 22, 2016 in Brussels, Belgium. Hours after Brussels was hit with a terrorist attack Tuesday morning  -- killing 31 people and injuring dozens more -- crowds began to gather at Place de la Bourse, a central square in the city, to honor the victims.

The somber scene included crying, candle lighting, hand holding and a small group quietly singing and swaying to John Lennon's "Imagine."

The square served as a memorial to the fallen, with several people writing messages of hope, grief and solidarity in chalk on the street, and others leaving flowers and flags.

The scene echoed the memorials held in Paris following the city's attacks last year, where people gathered in squares or in marches spreading Lennon's powerful and pertinent message, "Imagine all the people/Living life in peace."

"Imagine" also rang out from the bell tower of Brussel's University of Leuven's historic library. The university shared video of the bells with the message, "Hope must survive."
