Twitter collectively woke up Friday morning on April Fools' Day, hoping GOP front-runner Donald Trump would come out and say his candidacy was a ruse all along.

The Twitterverse didn't get its wish.

Instead, it woke up to a handful of political April Fools' Day jokes that fell flat — with many saying the truth of the 2016 presidential contest is stranger than any fiction a politician could cook up.

"Donald Trump is killing parody, along with our collective free time and my stock of desk bourbon," said Ben Ray, who works at the Democratic firm American Bridge that publicizes Republican gaffes on the campaign trail. "Lucky for us there's just 221 days to go!"

A few politicians did try to get in on the April Fools' Day fun.

They include Sen. Ted Cruz, who Rickrolled Trump in an attempt to goad him into debating him one-on-one.

Failed presidential hopeful Rand Paul had hinted he would make an endorsement in the presidential race Friday, only to reveal it was a hoax.

But all the Twitterverse yearned for was a Trump bombshell, that a sign proving his campaign was one big stunt would emerge.

But with Trump still firmly in the race for the Republican nomination, the closest Twitter will get to that admission is a Jimmy Kimmel April Fools' Day video with a Trump impersonator revealing the campaign was a joke all along.

We only hope next year we can Make April Fools' Day Great Again.
