While Portugal battled to a 1-0 extra time win over France to claim the Euro 2016 championship -- sans moth-addled Ronaldo -- riot police clashed with hooligans near the Euro Fan Zone by the Eiffel Tower, a violent end to a tournament that opened a month ago with similar clashes.

The clashes included fires, tear gas fired by police and warnings from officials for people to avoid the area due to the ongoing violence, which included bottles thrown at police.

The clashes reportedly began even before kickoff of the match, which was held around six miles away at Stade de France, as the Fan Zone reached its capacity of 90,000 fans, causing anger among those who were shut out.
