When Jake the dog was just three weeks old, he was caught in a house fire which left burns on 75% of his body.

But now, just under a year later, Jake is more than recovered -- he's helping the fire department fight fires, thanks to the kind fireman that saved him.

William Lindler, a firefighter with the Hanahan Fire Department in Hanahan, South Carolina, was off duty when he smelled smoke coming from his neighbor's home. The quick-thinking fireman rushed to grab his gear and found Jake in the burning building.

According to Lindler, Jake was in the building for about 10 minutes before he was able to rescue him, leaving serious burns all over his body.

"He survived conditions most humans would have perished in."

Jake's family had to abandon him at the vet due to his medical expenses and when Lindler found out he decided to adopt the pup, though Jake was in rough shape.

"He was on morphine for the pain and received daily medicated baths for about five weeks," said Lindler.

Fortunately, Jake made a full recovery, and he now helps in the fire department with his dad.

"I had plans to use him for a therapy dog for burned children but he doesn't sit still for too long," Lindler told Mashable. In December, the City of Hanahan swore in Jake as its official fire department mascot.

Lindler has also started to train Jake to be an arson detection dog.

Lindler proudly said of his pup, "He is awesome. Very loving and happy-go-lucky spirited." Clearly, the two are inseparable.
