LONDON -- #ThatMomentWhen your celebratory speech goes viral, but not for the reasons you were anticipating.

In a speech to his supporters given at 4 a.m. Friday following the results of the EU referendum, Ukip leader Nigel Farage proclaimed, "Let June 23 go down in our history as our independence day," calling the outcome a victory not just for Britain, but for all of Europe. (You can watch or read the full statement here.)

Farage's statement has been met by critics with disgust, specifically in reaction to his suggestion that independence had come "without having to fight, without a single bullet being fired." Many believe this choice of words to be in poor taste and spoken in flagrant disregard for the recent murder of Labour MP Jo Cox

Cox's suspected murderer Thomas Mair gave his name as “death to traitors, freedom for Britain” in court.

On a less somber note, Twitter is also calling the Ukip leader out for drawing some pretty strong parallels to Bill Pullman's classic speech in the Independence Day film.

There's even a theory that Brexit is actually a brilliant marketing ploy to promote Independence Day: Resurgence

In the current state of things, one really never knows.
