When a well-trained, friendly pit bull mix was surrendered to the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority this month, it was clear he'd once had a home. But instead of condemning the pup's former owners, rescuers chose compassion.

BAD RAP, a rescue organization based in Oakland, California, that advocates for pit bull terriers, wrote a poignant open letter to the people who surrendered the dog. Since it was posted to Facebook on Tuesday, it's garnered over 31,000 reactions -- likely for its thoughtfulness and compassion toward pup's former owners.

"We just wanted to let you know he's safe," the post reads. "More than safe, actually. He's happy and making new friends at record speed."

The note also speculates about what circumstances might have forced the dog's owners to give him up.

"No one knows what went wrong to prevent you from keeping him (housing? hard times? illness?) but we're guessing it must have killed you to walk back to your car without him," it reads.

So far, Facebook commenters are loving BAD RAP's positive attitude.

"I need to develop the heart toward previous owners like you guys do," one person wrote.

Another commenter spoke up about her own experience surrendering a dog. "Years ago however I had a pit mix that I had to surrender to the pound due to housing issues. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do," she wrote.

"I think about [the dog] all the time, and hope she is well," she added.

As for the pit bull, his story has a happy ending. The chubby little pup is headed to Balanced Bullies Rescue and Rehabilitation in Monroe, Washington, where he will receive care until he's ready to be placed in a forever home.

Possible names include Bear and Meatball.
