Young Adult author Rainbow Rowell may not have written Fangirl and Carry On to audition for the part of comic book writer, but the role seems like a perfect fit now that we know she'll be working with Marvel on an upcoming Runaways comic.

“This is my favorite Marvel book," Rowell told Entertainment Weekly. "When [editor Nick Lowe] first reached out to me a few years ago about maybe working for Marvel, it was the first thing I asked him about."

“The characters and original story by Brian K. Vaughan are just so great and so beautifully built," Rowell added in her EW interview. "I was really excited because I always felt like there were more Runaway stories and that book should just have kept going.”

Runaways tells the story of a disparate group of teens: Alex, Nico, Chase, Karolina, Gertrude, and their younger friend Molly, and is currently being adapted into a television series by Hulu. Artist Kris Anka will serve as the artist on Rowell's iteration -- which notably brings back Gert, who died in the first volume of the series.

In her EW interview, Rowell likened Runaways to her previous work, encouraging her fans to sample the world of Marvel's super teens:

One thing that is good about the Runaways is that they have a short history. I’ve reread all of their appearances. That’s actually doable. And that’s the best comic book. Why wouldn’t you go back and read it? It’s so great. Also the reason I wanted to write this book is because these characters feel related to my own. They resonated with me because that’s the kind of character I like to write. I feel very confident telling my readers, ‘If you like Carry On, a motley crew of kids coming together, you’re gonna love this.’ It’s the same kind of story.

Rowell's Runaways will release in September.
