Surgeons at London's Moorfields Eye Hospital successfully completed the first bionic eye transplant in the United Kingdom. An 88-year-old woman suffering from age-related macular degeneration was implanted with a two millimeter microchip in her retina. To get the implant to work, the woman was fitted with special glasses connected to a small computer. The camera scans her surroundings and transmits the information to the chip, which then sends it to her brain via electrical signals.

"Bionic nana," as her grandchildren call her, will undergo a year of testing and treatment, but the successful transplant sparks hope for countless others suffering from loss of vision
