Dr. Andy Mathis has been showered with praise this week for going above and beyond the call of duty.

On Saturday, the veterinarian shared a clip to Granite Hills Animal Care's Facebook page, where he and a stray dog named Graycie recently shared some breakfast.

In another post on the page, Mathis explains that a concerned citizen who found a stray dog called him on Jan. 29. The person was unable to care for the animal, so Mathis stepped in.

"We have a county animal shelter, that is really more animal control,"Mathis wrote on Facebook. "They aren't open late on Friday, and they don't do any medical care or rescue/adoptions, so that really even isn't an option."

The poor pup was emaciated, dehydrated, hypothermic, anemic and had a vaginal prolapse.

Mathis was forced to make the decision: euthanize the animal or help her make a recovery.

"Practical me says I should put her to sleep, but Veterinarian me wants to try and give her a chance," Mathis wrote.

With the help of some friends, a crowdfunding campaign was started, and they also named the puppy Graycie Claire.

Thankfully, the vets at the University of Georgia Veterinary School were able to bring her temperature down, temporarily fix her prolapsed vagina and rehydrate her.

Mathis brought Graycie back to Granite Hills Animal Care on Jan. 31, and slowly she began to recover.

However, eating was still an issue.

"She's been eating for the past 2 days, but not so comfortably, unless I leave the room," Mathis wrote. "So today I decided to sit in the cage with her."

And the two shared a fantastic feast, which has been watched more than 5 million times at the time of writing.

According to Granite Hills Animal Care, Graycie is still up for adoption or foster, however, Mathis admits that, "she has a little ways to go before she is ready to start looking for her family."
